(en) France, Antifascism - UCL Press Release: Our self-defense is vital, freedom for antifascists ! (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

In recent months, antifascism has faced multiple attacks from the right
and far right. But the recent cancellation of the May 9 Committee (C9M)
reminds us that this struggle is more relevant than ever, and that if it
manages to become widespread and popular, it can be victorious. ---- The
Deranque affair marked a new stage in the normalization of the most
overt form of fascism. At the same time, pressure is mounting against
anti-fascist forces. For example, on April 30th, the Council of State
upheld the dissolution of the Jeune Garde (Young Guard), citing the
preparation of its members for " violent confrontations . "
This weekend, as the C9M, a coalition of the most radical elements of
the far right, was preparing to mobilize several thousand fascists from
across Europe in the streets of Paris, the prefecture chose to ban both
their gathering and all anti-fascist demonstrations. This is a
reprehensible conflation of admirers of Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco
with anti-fascist forces.

We will not give an inch of ground
The fascists were ultimately unable to march in Paris, and the unified
antifascist village was able to take place. This is a victory for our
side and our strategy: that of a broad, unified, and popular
antifascism, determined to keep the components of our social camp
united, a camp built over time beyond posturing, sectarianism, and
vanguardism.

But behind this success, we mustn't forget that fascist groups also held
events this weekend. On Saturday morning, a forum on Europe (focused
on... Israel !), and on Saturday evening, a torchlit gathering in a
park, photos of which they circulated. They were out in force in Greater
Paris: they encountered the vigilance and massive mobilization of
activist groups, workers' unions, political organizations, and all those
who take responsibility in the face of potential far-right violence,
including the UCL activists who were in the streets, in Paris and
elsewhere, throughout the weekend.
Let the fascists know this: when they try to emerge, when they want to
organize to put their ideas into practice, they will find antifascists
ready and willing to oppose them. Far from discouraging us, the fact
that capitalists and the bourgeoisie are increasingly seduced by the
possibility of an electoral victory for the far right only strengthens
our conviction that our social camp must rely solely on its own strength
to resist and counterattack. Building a massive, grassroots, and popular
antifascist self-defense movement is a vital political imperative to
which the UCL calls and works wherever it is present.

Solidarity with all antifascists
Several anti-fascists have been imprisoned for their alleged role in the
death of Quentin Deranque, having defended themselves against a fascist
attack during which he was killed. They are paying the price for their
unwavering commitment to resisting far-right violence in Lyon. The same
is true for those who suffered police repression this past weekend in Paris.
12,000 demonstrators were present at the anti-fascist march on March 14
in Lyon.

For us, solidarity is not just a word and antifascism is not a crime: we
will ensure that we provide assistance to all antifascists who are
victims of repression. The UCL demands the release of the antifascists
imprisoned in connection with the Lyon affair and the release of all
imprisoned antifascists !
