CNT 1936-1939 Film Archives ---- In 2010, the Spanish National Film Commission (CNT) released a DVD box set to commemorate the centenary of its creation. ---- CNT - National Confederation of Labor ---- "On November 1, 1910, at the Palace of Fine Arts in Barcelona, the National Confederation of Labor was founded. The CNT, heir to the Spanish Region of the First International (1868), was born within the labor movement itself and was the country's first independent trade union organization. ---- To understand the imagination of our ancestors, what better way than to discover the cinema of which they were not only the spectators but also the actors? ---- In Barcelona, Madrid, Aragon, and the Levant, after defeating those who had risen up, arms in hand, against republican legality in 1936, the workers wiped off the gunpowder that covered their overalls to set in motion (without waiting for any help from the bosses who had fled and the politicians who had capitulated while they had stood up) almost all of The industry of Catalonia, the militias that kept fascism at bay, an agriculture capable of feeding a population starved by centuries of exploitation, and resources for collective cultivation.

We, who have joined the CNT, are happy to share these films with the rest of society. These films are so important not only for their cinematic qualities but also for the context and circumstances surrounding their production.

National Confederation of Labor

Volume 1 - From Columns to Militarization

This volume brings together the films made at the beginning of the revolution. After the failure of the putschists, columns of militiamen were organized by the parties and unions that wanted to retake the areas occupied by the rebels.

These films highlight the activity of the militias in Barcelona, the organization and departure of the units towards Aragon and the regions that experienced genuine revolutionary unrest.

Volume 2 - The Revolution

Even if it's a commonplace, It must be stated: The response to the coup d'état of July 18, 1936, was the revolution of July 19, which spread to virtually all areas not occupied by the rebels.

The unique aspect of the Spanish conflict is precisely this social transformation, which captured the world's attention and, sixty years later, remains present in the collective imagination of humanity.

Volume 3 - A People in Arms

"Day Breaks Over Spain" shows the Spanish people living a new life, a better life. The film highlights the entire revolutionary process up to the "triumph of the Republic," which corresponds to its conclusion in May 1938, when the Revolution was quelled and the CNT relegated to a secondary role by the Republicans and Communists.

This film underscores the importance of the alliance between the CNT and the UGT for the establishment of the new order.

Volume 4 - The War

The initial military operations conducted by the columns during the summer and autumn of 1936 were gradually replaced by the conventional fronts of a war in which large units clashed in operations planned by their respective General Staffs.

The transformation of the Revolution into a war changed the very nature of the fighting units. The militia columns gave way to the People's Army, and the Revolution became an anti-fascist war, or a war of national independence.

Bombing of Barcelona, 7-And You, What Are You Doing?, 8-The Empty Chair, 9-Moments of Spain, 10-Teruel Has Fallen, 11-The Capture of Teruel

Volume 5 - The Working Class

Introduction: Pablo Nacarino: Dawn of Hope, Antonio Sau Olite, S I E - 1937 - Spain - 58 minutes
This film was produced during the Spanish Civil War and social revolution by the CNT's Entertainment Industry Union (an anarcho-syndicalist union). "Aurora de Esperanza" is reminiscent of films from the same period by Renoir, or by Carné and Prévert.

The film tells the story of an exploited worker who rebels to bring about a new society, as the title suggests. Thanks to its screenplay and dramatic structure, this film belongs to the long melodramatic tradition of the libertarian movement. It recounts the struggle of a working-class family mistreated by bourgeois society as they fight for the dawn of revolution.

One could say that this film foreshadows the neorealist cinema that would emerge a few years later in Italy.

That's just how we are! Valentin R. Gonzalez S I E - 1936 - 30 minutes
"Nosotros somos asi" by Valentin R. Gonzalez tells the story of children who plead with adults to prevent the execution of one of their fathers, accused of treason.

The film concludes with a large rally, organized by the children, which highlights the concerns and desires for liberation of an entire society.

Volume 7 - The Bourgeois World II

Introduction by Alfonso Del Amo The Slums Pedro Puche SIE - 1937 - 94 minutes
While "Dawn of Hope" is a precursor to neorealism, Pedro Puche's "The Slums" is a blend of crime film and French cinema in the style of Marcel Carné. It tells a sordid story of jealousy, revenge, and prostitution, typical of bourgeois society, with a dockworker named "El Valencia" playing a positive role. The love story between Rosa and Ricardo provides a counterpoint, bringing a touch of purity to this sordid world.
