(en) Italy, FDCA, Cantiere #45 - War in Lebanon: A Libertarian Communist Position (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

We publish this text by Beirut libertarian communists because it breaks
down a prevailing simplification: the one that reduces the war to a
clash between blocs. There is no neutrality here, but a dual
rejection-of Israel and Hezbollah-that puts Lebanese society and its
contradictions back at the center. It concerns the war between Hezbollah
and Israel. Spurred by its far right, the Israeli government, pursuing
the vision of a "Greater Israel," has deployed its army, which bombs and
then invades villages. Dynamites and bulldozers are then deployed to
completely destroy the homes, now emptied of their inhabitants. Many
Lebanese are questioning why Lebanon is involved in this war in support
of the dictatorial regime in Tehran.
"Lebanon is in the throes of a war of massive destruction. The extent of
the damage caused to the country is colossal: nearly a million people
have been forced to flee their homes. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of
people have been killed and injured. These crimes committed in Lebanon
are the work of the Israeli army, responsible for unspeakable war
crimes; it is essential to denounce these violations.
The war we are enduring is the direct consequence of Hezbollah's entry
into the conflict against Israel, which occurred without consulting
anyone, neither the Lebanese people nor the government. Why did
Hezbollah enter this war? Not to defend the Iranian people, but to
support the religious, totalitarian, repressive, and unjust regime in
Tehran against all those who oppose it, as evidenced by the high number
of martyrs killed during the recent uprisings in Iran.
Let us also not forget what this regime has inflicted, since its
inception, on revolutionaries, reformists, liberals, and, in particular,
communists.
A conflict foreign to Lebanon
"As for Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, it is clear that neither is
seeking to defend the Iranian people oppressed by the power of the
mullahs. For Trump, this war is an opportunity to flex his muscles and
show off. And he never hesitates to use genocidal language, such as when
he promises to return Iran "to the Stone Age."
As for Netanyahu, he doesn't seem the least bit concerned that his
actions could constitute genocide under international law; just think of
the number of Lebanese civilians killed in recent years and the forced
displacement of a million Lebanese from their cities and villages.
The war waged by Hezbollah in defense of the Iranian regime is not a
just war. And this defense of the Iranian dictatorship raises concerns
among the Lebanese about Hezbollah's political project. Hezbollah isn't
simply being used by the Iranian regime: it is an integral part of it.
This is why many Lebanese fear a political project that would impose a
dictatorship on the country, a repression of freedoms, and a religious
regime-something that cannot work in Lebanon-modeled on the Iranian people.
This war is a suicidal war, a war that allows the Hezbollah-Israel duo
to settle their scores and, in reality, to settle the Islamic Republic's
scores with the State of Israel at the expense of the Lebanese people.
We cannot remain paralyzed in the face of this destructive war. Our task
today is to rebuild solidarity among all Lebanese, regardless of their
sectarian affiliations or beliefs, starting with Hezbollah sympathizers.
Lebanese Solidarity
"What holds the country together today is the solidarity of all
Lebanese, who welcome the displaced regardless of their affiliation.
This confirms that the Lebanese people, who have suffered so much
because of wars, are no longer fooled by lies aimed at sowing sectarian,
political, and regional divisions. Greetings to the aware and educated
Lebanese people.
The longer this war drags on, the worse the destruction of Lebanon, its
people, and its infrastructure will become. All Lebanese political
forces must unite to force an end to this war. Exclusive control of
weapons by the Lebanese state is a must. And the complete withdrawal of
Israeli occupation forces is an undeniable necessity.
Even within this war, a different space can open up. This war must push
us to deploy all possible efforts to build a new, modern system in
Lebanon: a revision of the Constitution that lays the foundations for a
new, unified, secular (with a complete separation of religion and
state), and democratic Lebanese Republic.
The Hezbollah fighters who fell in battle cannot be considered criminals
for this reason, even if they died for an ideology we fight. The meaning
they attributed to their actions was to resist Israeli aggression.
