(en) France, Monde Libertaire - Gérard Dupré has passed away (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Thu, 14 May 2026 07:54:23 +0300

Born in October 1947, Gérard Dupré died suddenly in March 2026. Some of us had the privilege of knowing this colleague whose career path was, to say the least, unique. In the early 1970s, he worked at Rhône-Poulenc and joined the FO union. It was at this company that he met his partner, Nicole. He then left Rhône-Poulenc to resume his studies; he later worked in a laboratory at the Henri-Mondor Hospital, then joined a research laboratory at UPEC (Université Paris-Est Créteil) as a researcher. He remained there until his retirement. Drawn to the desert, he undertook numerous trips throughout the Maghreb (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco) with his partner Nicole and their daughter Vanessa. Passionate about insects and invertebrates, he traveled throughout Central Africa, indulging his interest in arachnids and scorpions. Also interested in the rainforest, he made several trips to French Guiana. He founded a group for the study of animals, as well as a journal, and dedicated several books to them.

During these same years, he became involved in the libertarian movement and joined the Pinelli group in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, a member of the Anarchist Federation. The 1970s saw the emergence of numerous libertarian groups, both affiliated and independent, which organized a wide range of popular education activities (bookshops, printing presses, study groups, etc.). Gérard, along with a few other comrades, felt the need to bring people together and share information in a broad and horizontal manner within the movement and beyond activist circles, rejecting all forms of sectarianism. Thus, in early 1978, he participated in the creation of the CPCA (Center for Anarchist Propaganda and Culture) with Jean-Charles Canonne, a member of the Emma Goldman group within the Anarchist Federation. The CPCA ceased its activities in 1986.
A year later, he participated in the creation of the CDA Max Nettlau (Anarchist Documentation Center), which joined the FICEDL (International Federation of Libertarian Study and Documentation Centers). As with the CPCA, the objective was to gather all propaganda material, literature, and documents concerning the anarchist movement, without exception. Gérard was a member of the editorial committee.

In the early 1990s, he became more involved locally in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, where he lived, actively participating in a community support group he had founded in 1993. In 2013, this group evolved into the ASPHALTE community center, of which Gérard became chairman of the board until his move to Brittany in 2021. Settled with his partner and daughter in the Breton countryside, he dedicated himself to continuing his inventory of invertebrates.

Those who knew him remember that Gérard Dupré was above all a grassroots activist, deeply attuned to community aspirations, always seeking ways to foster solidarity and community spirit. A nature lover, curious and generous, he was also a poet and traveler (he published about ten poetry collections).

Condolences to his partner Nicole and his daughter Vanessa.
