Angela Rostas, a Traveller, was murdered two years ago. UCL demands
truth and justice against the anti-Roma sentiment and state racism that
caused her death. ---- Two years ago, Angela Rostas was murdered by two
neighbors, Franck B. and Mathias A., because she was a Traveller. She
was a mother of three daughters and seven months pregnant with her
fourth child. On February 22, 2024, she was shot dead in her home in
Chênex, Haute-Savoie. The crime followed years of racist harassment,
culminating in the arson attack on her caravan the previous year. A few
hours earlier, in a neighboring town, the two murderers had already
attempted to assassinate another caravan.
Two years ago, anti-Roma sentiment claimed a life. The anti-Roma
harassment that culminated in the murder of Angela Rostas was fueled by
the most common racist stereotypes and accusations against Roma and
Travellers. The murderers, two far-right hunters, expressed their racist
hatred in numerous social media posts before carrying out the attack.
This crime is not simply the work of isolated individuals. It is part of
a global rise in racism and the normalization of its most deadly forms.
It is also part of a continuum of state-sponsored anti-Roma sentiment.
France confines Travellers to unsanitary sites and still refuses to
acknowledge its responsibility in their genocide (1939-1946). Many local
councils tolerate, or even amplify, the most vile racist rhetoric
against Travellers. During the years of harassment preceding the crime,
all of the family's complaints were dismissed. Two years ago, state
racism killed.
We can only note with sorrow, but without surprise, that there was no
particular outcry on this anniversary within the political class: they
were surely too busy mourning a neo-Nazi.
Against anti-Gypsyism, against state racism: never again.
