(en) France, OCL: Anti-union repression at Mechachrome Tunisia (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Sun, 22 Mar 2026 08:07:50 +0200

See online: On the CNT-AIT website https://cnt-ait.info/2026/02/11/mecachrome-fr/ ---- MECACHROME: Workers at the Toulouse site stand in solidarity with workers at the Tunisian site ---- Mecachrome is a metalworking company that works for the aerospace sector. It has sites in various countries, including France, Morocco, Tunisia, and Canada. At the end of December, employees at the Fouchana site in Tunisia decided to organize to make their voices heard and to voice their demands, which are, all things considered, quite standard and legitimate regarding wages and working conditions. They decided to create a union branch of the UGTT, the main Tunisian union, which is far from revolutionary. But this is already too much for Mecachrome management, which doesn't much like unions, except for company-owned unions like FO in France.

Here, the labor code and "good democratic manners" prevent
bosses from putting their true thoughts into practice... (even if
they sometimes express them, as for example during the New Year's greetings from the Director
of Mécachrome Toulouse to the staff this year, who said verbatim about
union members "who prevent others from working[by going
on strike], I'm not against headbutting... and I wouldn't hesitate
to do it again...". But in Tunisia, where for over a year now
the petty dictator Kaïs Saïed, a former law professor who is blowing up
the entire charade of legality, has reigned, bosses feel free to
give free rein to their desire to get rid of rebellious workers. No sooner had the local union branch at Mécachrome Fouchana
been created (in strict compliance with the law) and
called for a strike, than the main organizers
were immediately fired.

Since then, worker resistance is organizing in Tunisia. The laid-off workers are fighting for their reinstatement. They can count on the support of some of the Mécachrome workers in France, because they know that tomorrow they could be the ones to bear the brunt of the company bosses' anti-union fury.

An attack against one of us is an attack against all of us!

Long live international workers' solidarity!

Letter of support to the Tunisian comrades of Mécachrome Fouchana, laid off for striking and organizing a union branch

Dear Comrades,

We were informed of your situation by workers from Mécachrome, at the Launaguet site in France. We are the CNT-AIT union (the French branch of the International Workingmen's Association).

It is with shock and anger that we learned Your
dismissal following the organization of your strike at the
Mécachrome site in Fouchana. We offer you our full solidarity in
your struggle against management, which has categorically refused to
recognize the creation of your union branch, despite it being established
in full compliance with Tunisian law.

We have also learned of management's categorical refusal to
consider all your demands, however legitimate. The
accusations from management, claiming that you blocked access
to the site for non-strikers, are outrageous! It is clear that
management has arbitrarily dismissed militant workers based on
false accusations. Workers are not disposable objects that can be
simply thrown away.

Do not let yourself be intimidated by this management, which wanted to make
you an example to all workers at all Mécachrome sites
around the world. Management is trying to crush all
attempts Solidarity among workers, so that we can continue
to make profits without worrying about working conditions,
safety, and wage increases for every worker at
Mécachrome, whether they are in Tunisia, Morocco, France, or Canada... An
attack against one of us is an attack against all! The
CNT AIT union in Toulouse condemns in the strongest possible terms this
serious attack against workers who are trying to organize and
defend themselves for better working conditions, safety,
and wage increases, which are legitimate and dignified demands.

Workers' solidarity knows no borders. Together, we are stronger
in the face of injustice and repression. Our union offers its
fullest support to the laid-off workers as well as to the UGTT
Mécachrome Tunisia.

Long live international workers' solidarity!

The activists of the CNT AIT
