(en) France, Monde Libertaire - Threat to Baranoux (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Another community space threatened with closure ---- Paris, City of Lights. Or so they say, because in reality, the capital is becoming increasingly dark and silent. Community spaces and places for mutual support are closing one after another, victims of gentrification, exorbitant rents, and real estate projects that have been transforming Paris into a dormitory town or museum city for several years now, at the expense of spaces for exchange, engagement, and the fight against a system based on money, isolation, and hatred of others. The latest manifestation of this trend: the planned eviction of a community-oriented and socially engaged space in the still-working-class neighborhood of Place des Fêtes in the 19th arrondissement. ---- This is BARANOUX, 78 rue Compans, overlooking Place des Fêtes. The building owner is asking its tenant, the financially struggling cooperative VOLUME, to vacate the Baranoux space it houses, in exchange for a 10% rent reduction. If they refuse, a real estate project is already in the works: converting the building into offices.

But what exactly is this BARANOUX? It's a community-run space managed by volunteers: a participatory bar, a community kitchen, a climate emergency center... Its goal: to inform, raise awareness, and mobilize local residents on issues of ecology and social justice, and to bring together associations, activists, and collectives in a welcoming and engaged space. It was in this spirit that, recently (on January 23rd), a benefit evening for striking workers at a Biocoop store in the same neighborhood-a strike we've already covered-was organized in this Baranoux, a prime example of the neighborhood's grassroots and community-oriented character.

A petition to support and help BARANOUX is circulating online (maintenant-le-mouvement.org), and you can also participate in the day of support this Saturday, February 28th (from 2 pm to 10 pm).

To maintain this space of resistance and mutual aid, and to preserve the working-class character of this neighborhood, please join us this Saturday at BARANOUX; the address is 78 rue Compans in the 19th arrondissement of Paris (very close to Place des Fêtes).
