(en) Italy, FAI, Umanita Nova: Pontedera: Protest Against Military Rail Logistics (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Sun, 25 Jan 2026 07:51:13 +0200

On Friday, December 19, a protest organized by Ferrovieri Contro la Guerra and the Livorno Antimilitarista Coordination took place at Pontedera station to protest the expansion of platform 4 for the transit of war material. In addition to the organizers and some railway workers, the initiative was attended by Stop Rearm Europe of Valdera, a coordination group that brings together various local groups active in anti-war mobilizations, activists from the No Base Movement, and the 29 June Assembly of Viareggio, part of the 12 October Coordination on Health, Safety, and Repression. The presence of "Assemblea," formed after the Viareggio train disaster, is connected to the ongoing mobilization through the issue of security-a security that was lacking in Viareggio and could now become increasingly lacking. It is clear that the increased transit of war material, in addition to highlighting the general military escalation and the presence of war in our daily lives, poses serious safety concerns for citizens. Dangerous cargo will be transported on a platform at the Pontedera civilian station, amidst people traveling to work and school, in a city with a high concentration of housing, employment, and healthcare facilities. This poses a serious risk of accidents-which, unfortunately, are not uncommon on the railways-the consequences of which can be exacerbated by the presence of military material.

The information campaign attracted the interest of many residents and travelers, who expressed their solidarity. The initiative is part of the campaign that Ferrovieri Contro la Guerra is carrying out against the intensification of military traffic on rails, strengthened following the agreement between Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and Leonardo, a leader in the war industry, as well as the more general activity that various anti-militarist groups are carrying out against the militarization of Tuscany.

We thank all those who participated and supported us. We will provide information on upcoming initiatives.

Pontedera - Train Station

Track 4 GOES TO WAR

The conflict starts here too, let's stop it!

The militarization of Italy's railway infrastructure continues shamefully, unabated and without informing the community. The European Union, as part of the "MCE (Connecting Europe Mechanisms) transport projects completed under the Military Mobility Fund," has provided EUR3,875,000 in funding for the expansion of Track 4 at Pontedera station (Pisa) and Tracks 1, 2, 3, and 4 at Palmanova station (Udine), adapting the safety, signaling, and electric traction systems. The purpose of the project is to allow the maneuvering of 740-meter-long trains for dual civilian-military use. Therefore, on the one hand, effective freight transport must be achieved, while on the other, military mobility must be encouraged for training and defense purposes, thus enabling the dual use, military and civilian, of the Florence-Pisa and Udine-Cervignano railway lines.

This military and warmongering escalation is catapulting into civilian stations like Pontedera, where a large influx of travelers occurs daily. Travelers who, while waiting for their train, may find themselves among militarized trains carrying explosives, tanks, military vehicles, soldiers, and so on. This is a highly dangerous situation where security is seriously jeopardized due to the connection between transported war material and potential train accidents.

This is also a psychological conditioning strategy: accustoming citizens to the widespread presence of weapons and military personnel (as already happens in stations under the guise of security), to accustom them to the daily routine of war.

The "Livorno Antimilitarist Coordination" and the "Railway Workers Against the War" collective denounce the use of Italian railway infrastructure and civilian railway personnel for military purposes and oppose these projects. As we previously reported on the suspension of rail traffic between Pisa and Livorno in June to facilitate the completion of the military yard in the Tombolo-Canale Navicelli-Camp Darby triangle (the largest US arsenal outside of the United States), we intend to draw public attention to what is actually happening on the front lines of the escalating global conflict. The military use of the Florence-Pisa railway line will connect Florence, the city center of Pisa, and the ports of Livorno and La Spezia with the

Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor of the central network.

We support safe and civil rail traffic

We oppose the use of the railway network for military purposes
