(en) Brazil, FAG: HISTORY IS MADE BY THE PEOPLE - Celebration of 2 years of the Gãh Ré Reoccupation (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Wed, 6 Nov 2024 07:42:31 +0200

On this October 18th, once again, with hearts warmed by rebellious joy and with our feet firmly planted in our convictions, the Federação Anarquista Gaúcha - FAG/CAB celebrates the milestone of another year of the Gãh Ré Reoccupation in Morro Santana, in Porto Alegre. ---- Our more than two decades of community activism in this hillside have brought us closer to its people, their demands, their dreams and their struggle. Our marches and walks have brought us alongside brave people like Gah Té, a Kaingang leader in the city, chief of the reoccupation and now a councilor of the Teia dos Povos. Together with the indigenous council of the Reoccupation and our Kaingang relatives, we have stood shoulder to shoulder in the fight against real estate speculation, land rentism and the destruction of biomes in our neighborhoods and in our city.

After decades of waiting for institutions that only exposed the children and young people of the Kaingang community to the violence of the outskirts, precariousness, and racism, it was direct action that returned the territory to its true owners. This struggle culminated on the glorious night of October 18, 2022, when several sectors that were said to be fighting turned everything they could towards the electoral process, and the indigenous people tore down the fence and retook their territory at the foot of the largest hill in the city, inaugurating a victorious reoccupation that confronted the bankers and millionaires of the criminal Maisonnave family (whom we denounced in the dossier), recovering the territory for the people, through the hands of those who fight, an important part of the forest still standing.

Another inspiring example of courage came with the occupation of the FUNAI Local Technical Coordination in Porto Alegre in March 2023. The direct action put pressure on the Foundation and managed to overturn the repossession order against the community and, in addition, expedited the arrival of specialized indigenous experts from FUNAI in Brasília to Porto Alegre to carry out preliminary studies to qualify the demarcation.

Today we celebrate another year of private property being fought back, giving space to rebel territory for reconstruction and care of the forest against constructions that destroy nature.
