Senator Lyn Allison will today release a Democratic Private
Members' Bill to stop the Jabiluka Mine.

Senator Allison - the Democrat's Environment Spokesperson - will
release it in Darwin at 11 am local time (11:3Oam AEST).

The bill prohibits the mining or transport of uranium in or near
world heritage properties.

"Our Bill closes the loophole allowing the transport of uranium
ore through the world heritage listed area on the Arnhem Highway between
the Jabiluka and Ranger mines," Senator Allison said. "Even though this
highway runs through world heritage Kakadu, it was technically excluded
from restrictions on uranium."
"Kakadu has rock art dating back tens of thousands of years, and
it's the spiritual and cultural home of the earliest Australians. It's
also a mmagnificent habitat for birds and wetlands.

"It is absolutely not the place to put a uranium mine."

Senator Allison also paid tribute to the traditional owners of the
mine. "Yvonne Maragula and the Mirrar people have worked so tirelessly to
protect their country. I'd also like to thank all of those Australians
who have loudly said no to this mine, especially those who are here opn
the blockade. They are all inspiring people and thank goodness there are
people like them who are speaking out at the awful decisions this
government is making.

"I came up to Jabiluka to see what impact the mine would really
have, and I was astonished that they would put a mine in such an area. I
challenge all politicians to come over here and see what is really going
to happen, what it will really mean to these people."
