yesterday, 20.2. between 20 and 40 000 people came out to the streets of
zagreb. they wanted to participate in a syndicate-organized demo against
the social politics of the government, at the main city square. However,
the city authorities banned the demo, and denied that it can happen at the
main square, and offered some other locations in separated parts of the
city. Group of syndicates which were organizing the event refused to move
the demo to another place (claiming that it's peoples constitutional right
to demonstrate werever they want to), and decided to go for it.

Around 14:30 (the demo was to happen at 15:00) huge police forces blocked
all enterances to the main square in order to stop the people from coming
in. There were at least 2 or 3 cordons at every enterance + barricades
(hm. it seems to me that cops got it wrong. weren't the barricades
proletariat's tactics?!). To shorten a bunch of cops everywhere.

People tryed to rush into the square from 4 or 5 directions (not sure),
but were stopped. A couple of times, a few cordons were broken, but other
2 would stop the wave.
No mayor violence was reported.
There was a lot of solidarity among participants, and even a lot of
tourist-demonstrators (passers by) ended up in the first rows, pushing
cops. The athmosphere was quite o.k., and right now there are a lot of
people who are pretty pissed by the government.

After 5 hours of attempting, the crowd gave up, and went to a smaller demo
nearby (not reported to police) which was almost a disaster - boring
speaches, no particular point.

general impression: strange, no strong points, cops won... but! it was
interesting! especially for Zagreb.
