Anti-War Demo and March in D.C.
Washington -- At noon today, over 1500 people gathered at Dupont Circle
in downtown D.C. to say no to the escalating U.S. aggression against
Iraq. After several speeches, the large contingent marched down
Connecticut Avenue and over to Lafayette Park, which is across the
street from the White House.
The event was sponsored by the D.C. Coalition to Stop War in Iraq.
The crowd was a diverse one of all ages, races, and nationalities.
Participants included people from peace groups, church groups, political
groups, anarchists, leftists, Arab Americans, and many who are just
concerned about the possibility of U.S. aggression versus the Iraqi
people.
While it was evident that many had come from the greater D.C.
metropolitan area, there were also contingents and folks from around the
region.
During the rally and the march people shouted "1-2-3-4, we don't want
your racist war" and "Don't bomb Iraq," among many other slogans.
Accompanying the march was the "Precision Wag the Dog Marching
Contingent," which included live wiener dogs, big dogs, stuffed animal
dogs, and a big dog puppet.
The march ended on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House,
where the crowd marched around for a few minutes until riot cops on
horses persuaded the demonstrators to go back into the park.
As another rally got underway in the park, around 6 or 7 students
decided to sit on the sidewalk in front of the White House in an act of
civil disobedience. They were arrested, at a leisurely pace, and taken
away to a local jail.
Several future events are planned, including a demo to be held soon
after the U.S. attacks Iraq. Transportation is also being planned to the
anti-war demo being held in New York City next week.
Several dozen anarchists also participated. Most were from the D.C.
area, but there were also others from Richmond and other places.
