     GERMAN LEFTISTS RALLY 1 YEAR AFTER MURDER

     MAGDEBURG, Germany (AP) -- About 1,000 young leftists
protesting neo-Nazi violence turned violent themselves Sunday,
throwing rocks at police and journalists and breaking windows in
two banks and a gas station.
   
     The fighting injured 30 police in this east German town, and
154 of the leftists, known as punks, were arrested, authorities
said.
   
     The leftist youths gathered to mark the first anniversary of
the death of 17-year-old Frank Boettcher, a punk who was killed
after he strayed into a right-wing neighborhood.
   
     The march started at Magdeburg's train station and ended at
the graveyard where Boettcher is buried.
   
     A large police presence prevented fights between punks and
neo-Nazi groups, and kept the marchers from entering the extreme
right-wing neighborhood where teen-ager was killed.
   
     ``Letting the leftists in here would result in
catastrophe,'' police spokesman Frank Kuessner said.
   
     Boettcher had been waiting at a streetcar stop when he was
kicked in the head and knifed on the night of Feb 8, 1997. On
Saturday, a plaque was laid at the site saying, ``No one will
ever forget'' and signed by the ``Anti-facist Youth Initiative.''
