(en) luta fob: CAMPAIGN IN DEFENSE OF THE GUARANI AND KAIOWÁ PEOPLE, FOOD AUTONOMY AND RECOVERY OF CRIOULE SEEDS (pt)

Date Thu, 20 May 2021 10:14:49 +0300

June 14: LAND AND FREEDOM! In memory of those who fall, for the health and autonomy of those that are resisting. ---- On June 14, 2016, the Caarapó Massacre took place, when Clodiodi de Souza - 26-year-old Guarani and Kaiowá health agent - was brutally murdered by landowners and ruralists after the retaking of Toro Paso, part of the Indigenous Land of Dourados Amambaipegua I, in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, in Brazil. At the time, more than 10 people were injured, including a 12-year-old child. Before the attack, the farmers hid in COAMO and organized the armed action through Whatsapp, with the involvement of police and private security guards. Currently, only Clodiodi's father is in prison, accused of crimes he did not commit and sentenced to 18 years in prison, despite being elderly and suffering from chronic and degenerative diseases. The 5 farmers responsible for the articulation of the massacre remain free. Still, in 2020, Jesus de Souza - brother of Clodiodi - died of Covid-19, as a result of the health complications with the bullet that was lodged in his abdomen, fired by the same murderers of his brother.

June 14 is also a day of collective resistance, for which Leonardo was criminalized. It was when collectively the Guarani and Kaiowá of Tey'i Kue and people from other territories recovered in the region faced the cowardly attack of the farmers and advanced for 4 more land recovery of their tekoha, as they refer to the ancestral territory. The "TERRA E LIBERDADE" (Land and Liberty) Campaign is added to the 4th consecutive years of memory and struggle events held in Kunumi Poty Verá in honor of Clodiodi and the defense of the tekoha. Throughout 2020, since the beginning of the pandemic, FOB has carried out fundraising campaigns through the campaign "Only the people save the people!", resulting in wide distribution of seeds and food production for the community.

Today, with the advance of agribusiness enshrined in the Brazilian State and in indigenous institutions - such as a FUNAI and SESAI militarized by colonels and Bolsonaro/ruralist delegates -, the Bolsonaro government presses to liberate agribusiness in indigenous lands, mainly through monoculture soybeans and other grains, as well as livestock, mining and even tourism and oil extraction through PL 191/20. This scenario directly affects different indigenous peoples around the country and increase the catastrophic conjuncture generated by the combination of the pandemic, hunger, lack of water, the precariousness of indigenous health, and the deepen in violence and repression promoted by agribusiness in Guarani lands and Kaiowá, continually harassed by farmers who promote leases and torture, like the recent armed attack on 3 residents of Guaiviry, where Nísio Gomes was disappeared and murdered in 2011.

In light of this, our campaign seeks to strengthen the solidarity networks of the Guarani and Kaiowá people, with special emphasis on exchanges of Creole seeds and food produced in the Indigenous Land Dourados Amambaipegua I, with a focus on the resumption of the Caarapó region. All the money raised by the campaign will be returned for the acquisition of Creole seeds from different places and villages in Brazil, which will be distributed to seed banks at Tey'i Kue with the promotion of seed custodians in each retaken area. White corn - avati moroti - is our main focus, the mainstay of the Guarani and Kaiowá fields used in the baptism ritual of white corn, the Jerosy Puku, which has not occurred in Tey'i Kue for over 40 years. We will seek to create effective conditions for it to be realized again, strengthening the spiritual and material life of the people, demonstrating that it is possible to produce alternatives to leasing and, mainly, alternatives to capitalism in the search for Teko Porã.
