(en) Louise Michel - Why I became an anarchist (fr)

Date Wed, 2 Sep 2020 09:28:14 +0300

I became an anarchist during the deportation trip to New Caledonia. In the course of the four months we saw nothing but sky and water, only sometimes the white sail of a ship appeared on the horizon. Our ship, swayed by the gentle rhythm of the waves, as if two huge arms grabbed it, groaned when it sank into the deep troughs of the waves; and the wind sounded in the sails. - I had time, a lot of time to think. - The commune. I saw our comrades at work, and gradually I came to believe that even the most honest, if they could wield power, would resemble the villains they once fought. I saw the impossibility of freedom being reconciled with any kind of power. I felt that if the revolution adopts any form of government, it is over; and if institutions of the past, which seemed to be disappearing, persist - then they just have a different label.

For every person who comes to power, the state is ultimately a reflection of himself, he regards him as the dog gnaws the bone and only defends it for his own benefit. Just as power makes hard, selfish and cruel, so slavery degrades, and only anarchy can bring man to live freely and happily. Do we know whether what seems utopian to us today may not already be a reality in the next epoch, the one after that? So that the disenfranchised people no longer keep the deceptive chimeras - parties and states - alive with their own blood, we must fight for the realization of anarchy, and because I reject coercion and oppression, I am an anarchist.
