(en) Russia, AIT: Anti-war rally in Kyiv (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The Ukrainian capital hasn't seen anything like this in a long time. Despite the escalating pro-war sentiment, the authorities' desire to fight "to the last Ukrainian," and the terror against dissent, people took to Kyiv's Independence Square on October 3 to demand an end to hostilities and the establishment of peace. ---- The protest was held at the request of Oleksandr Todorov, a journalist and human rights activist from Odessa. He fought on the front lines and experienced firsthand the futility of war. Back in early September, he published a video calling on both civilians and military personnel to come to the Ukrainian president's office on Bankova Street on September 10th to personally question Zelenskyy about widespread corruption, including in the military, poor supplies, the treatment of soldiers, and the overall "lawlessness in the country and in the army." Unit command initially wanted to send Todorov to a psychiatric hospital, then to the front. He was then detained, but, as he claims, managed to escape and reach Kyiv.

On September 10, several people responded to his call for action. Soon after, according to Todorov's family, he was arrested and remanded in custody on charges of leaving his military unit without permission, with bail set at 175,000 hryvnias. The bail has already been collected, but banks are still verifying it. Todorov himself remains in a prison pretrial detention center.

On October 3rd, many more people came to the square. This time, they openly demanded peace. Ukrainian-language posters read: "We demand peace"; "Stop the war, only peace!"; "The TCC are executioners"; "No mobilization! People are not a resource! Stop the war!" and others. Contrary to chauvinistic prohibitions, there were also posters in Russian: "We don't need war. Peace for the world!"; "No to the Zelensky regime! No to repression! No to corruption! No to the TCC gang! No to busification! People are not a 'resource'! No to war!"

The protest took place against a backdrop of widespread public fatigue: according to recent opinion polls, more than 72% of Ukrainian citizens support peace negotiations.

"Despite the atmosphere of chauvinism, constant propaganda, repression, and bullying in Ukrainian society, we can see how 'grass is gradually beginning to grow through the asphalt,' despite the state and nationalism ," commented the Telegram channel "Voice of Anarchists." " Before this, we had already observed constant resistance to mobilization on the ground, which occurred almost daily for years. Endless videos of riots against the TCC were shared practically every day. Sometimes, as in the case of Vinnytsia, these individual riots turned into collective ones. And as we see, the anti-mobilization protest is transforming into a clearly expressed anti-war and anti-militaristic protest. This dynamic is something to celebrate!"
