To understand the rise of Nazism, the work of Marie-Bénédicte Vincent is

each member assigned a function either directly within the Party or

was male and masculinist; fewer than 10% of its members were women.
After 1933, membership surged, tripling in just a few months. Nearly 5%
of Germans were members of the Party, which sought to control all of
society through ideological control and state control. The party
eventually became a structure encompassing over 20% of the population
and participating in the complete mobilization of society. Its leaders
and members fully participated in the system, controlling it and
responding to the demands of the leadership and the established criminal
system.
