In the last week of August, the US Treasury Department, through OFAC
(the agency responsible for managing and applying economic and financial
sanctions), sanctioned Autistici/Inventati (A/I) - an Italian collective
that, since 2001, has provided digital infrastructure to movements and
activists - for alleged "support for terrorism." The designation given
by Washington, as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" (SDGT), is
part of a narrative used to claim that the collective provided
financial, material, or technological support to terrorism and
organizations already under sanctions; the British group Palestine
Action and the transnational Palestinian movement Masar Badil were also
included in this authoritarian US sanction.
Autistici/Inventati is a collective run on a voluntary basis. In Brazil,
it is known for the NoBlogs blogging platform, which offers free
infrastructure as an alternative to large commercial platforms and
presents itself as an anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti-sexist, and
anti-militarist organization, opposed to capitalism and
authoritarianism, selecting the projects it hosts based on their
compatibility with these principles.
This is not the first time that collectives offering autonomous
infrastructure for safer communication and digital self-defense tools
have faced repression for daring to oppose Big Tech and its
structures-and the very policies of virtual control imposed by the
ideological dynamics of the United States. In recent decades, especially
with the growing dominance of companies like Meta and X, more
persecution has occurred against individuals and alternative providers
who express an anti-capitalist stance.
We defend independent technology, allied with popular movements, and
that does not condone the surveillance and corporate control of the media.
The Libertarian Socialist Organization condemns the US government's
attempt to silence political discourse by criminalizing autonomous
infrastructure providers, and unites in support of Autistici/Inventati!
