(en) Italy, UCADI, #209 - The Democratic Party and foreign policy (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The Democratic Party's foreign policy positions, in the context of a
left-wing alliance for the upcoming Italian general elections, appear
particularly deficient, despite Secretary Schlein's best efforts to
reshape the party line and bring it into line with a dignified stance,
at least close to national interests . Compared to Conte's intentionally
vague positions to leave room for future maneuvering, the line shared by
the Democratic Party Secretary is one of absolute adherence to
Atlanticist positions, attributable to the policies of the US Democrats.
This is because the Democratic Party, a party without a soul or
personality-or, as it used to be called, a party without even a guiding
ideology-has adopted the US Democrats' neoliberal program and ideology,
completely abandoning any remaining vestige of socialism.
This choice is not merely the result of cultural unease or a profound
crisis in the party's strategic vision, but contains elements of a
tactical choice, dictated by the party's need for credibility with the
hegemonic power that has exercised uninterrupted control over a
satellite country since the end of World War II. Schlein, like all her
predecessors, knows that if she wishes to govern, she must first obtain
the approval of the US ambassador and the US government, and therefore
she devotes herself to professing an Atlanticism that provides certainty
to the US government. She also knows that the US government has secured
control of a fraction of the party. A powerful force capable of
influencing its political line, the so-called reformist wing comprises a
mix of neoliberal policy fanatics, opportunists floating within a
servile mainstream ready to prostitute themselves to the powers that be,
and members of lobby groups linked to various US-based think tanks that
shape the country's foreign policy. These groups can at any time seize
the party leadership, thwarting its leadership. It's no coincidence
that, precisely to overcome this resistance and revitalize the party, it
was necessary to appoint a non-member as secretary.
For the reasons mentioned above, Schlein's choice was to move most of
the apartments in the European Parliament to the reformist wing and to
that compromised political class of the party that lent itself to this
use, starting with Gori, and continuing with Gualmini, Picierno, Arianna
Media, who, deliberately ignored in order to diminish their role and
seeing their ability to influence reduced, have recently decided to
abandon the party, while it is hoped that others are also "warming up
their engines", even if they still resist within it, because they know
full well that they would not be re-nominated and would lose all
usefulness for their masters.
To escape the influence described above, the Democratic Party Secretary
agreed to bind her position to that of the European Socialists group.
However, the latter supports the von der Stupid Commission, which
represents the European hub of the US lobbies working to fragment
Russia. They see the division of its spoils and the resulting
constellation of small states as ideal places to do business and plunder
its resources within the framework of a new colonialism. The
deliberately fomented anti-Russian hatred serves to conceal the belief
that a vast and sparsely populated territory is ideally suited to
exploitation and is easier prey than densely populated territories like
Africa and Asia, the Middle East, or Latin America. This aspiration
contains a conceptual error because it ignores Russia's possession of a
missile and nuclear arsenal, which it would deploy if forced to, rather
than succumb.
Once this choice has been made, it is pointless to consider that over
time the diplomatic documents released by various countries on previous
international political discussions, on the Minsk Conference, and on the
agreements signed have unequivocally demonstrated that the willingness
to agree was knowingly violated by Western countries who intended, by
signing agreements, to gain the time necessary to arm Ukraine, as in
fact was done.
The PD's anchoring to the European Union
The narrative of the so-called defenders of Western values that Ukraine
defends these values doesn't hold up for obvious reasons if one simply
looks at the contrast between the principles contained in the founding
documents of the European Union and the policies practiced by Ukrainian
nationalists. One of the cornerstones of the community principles that
underpins the peaceful coexistence of its peoples is respect for
minority rights. These rights are repressed in Ukraine to the point that
their failure to be respected is one of the main causes of the conflict.
Laws passed by the Ukrainian government persecute the country's
Russian-speaking minority, preventing ethnic Russian citizens and anyone
who wishes to speak Russian, prohibiting the use of Russian in schools,
and even persecuting and arresting those who use it in public. They have
ordered the removal of Russian books from libraries and organized
bonfires to dispose of them. They have banned Russian writers,
musicians, and poets, obliterated place names, destroyed monuments and
cultural vestiges that hark back to Russian culture. They even removed
saints of Russian origin from the calendar and, last but not least,
established a national autocephalous Church, banning the canonical
Orthodox Church, which has historically been the majority church in the
country. Specific repressive legislation was enacted to target any other
religious denomination or association that refuses to accept
subordination to the National Autocephalous Church, which has become the
state religion, benefits from public funding, and has seized property
expropriated from other religious denominations.
Nor does the tampering with Ukrainian memory, culture, and traditions
stop there. History is being rewritten by law by the current government,
exalting those national elements that hark back to Nazism and Fascism
and are responsible for organizing the pogroms that took place during
the first 50 years of the 20th century, leading to the extermination of
Jews, Gypsies, and Polish populations in Ukraine by the nationalist and
Nazi militias that dominated those lands.
We cannot imagine that all this is unknown to the Secretary of the
Democratic Party, just as it is not unknown to many Italian citizens,
who therefore fail to understand how it is compatible with the party's
political line to provide indiscriminate and unconditional support to
the Ukrainian government, especially since this occurs to the complete
detriment of the interests of the Italian people, who see themselves
deprived of resources intended to fuel the ongoing war and, above all,
to fuel speculation, theft, the arms trade worldwide, and the corruption
of the political class that runs the Ukrainian government.
Rather than embrace the rhetoric of a defenseless Italy, faced with
Trump's decision to withdraw US troops from Europe, or at least some of
them, the Party Secretary refuses to understand that calling for the
dismantling and abandonment of US bases in Italy would lend greater
clarity and credibility to the Democratic Party's political line. This
is especially true since these bases, in addition to being a tool for
influencing Italian political life, are also the site of nuclear bombs,
certainly not intended to defend Italy but rather to project US
interdiction power toward Russia.
This servile and subservient attitude lends the party's foreign policy a
lack of dignity and credibility, raising more than a few doubts about
the truly innovative capabilities of a left-wing government. This is one
of the reasons for the electorate's persistent disinterest in voting,
clearly believing that nothing would change by supporting a government
led by the Democratic Party or, at least, one in which the party plays a
significant role.
Now that Italy, through its arms supply to Ukraine, has increasingly
become a rearguard on the front, exposing the country to legitimate
Russian retaliation, the party's foreign policy positions can only
contribute to alienating electorate support, especially considering the
high cost of aid to Ukraine, which deprives families, healthcare,
schools, and other services.
The Democratic Party leadership should understand that the time for
ambiguity is over and that there is no room for further delaying a
responsible awareness of the country's international positioning. This
turning point must and can begin the assumption of a new role on the war
in the Middle East and the credibility of its condemnation of the
Israeli government and its repression of the Palestinians.
