In Italy, anarchism is a constantly evolving idea ---- Selection of articles from Umanita Nova, translated by Ouzo - Marseille Anarchist Federation - Oaï Group ---- This translation of two articles recently published in Umanita Nova aims to share with readers of Le Monde Libertaire and members of the FA the vitality of our Italian comrades' organization. Last September, the FAI celebrated its 80th anniversary. We send all our comrades across the Alps our best wishes for health and continued struggle. ---- In the name of Bakunin, Malatesta, Berneri, but also Gino Lucetti and antifascism... ---- The FAI (Italian Anarchist Federation), a structured, federalist, and self-governed organization, was born from the ashes of the Unione Anarchica Italiana (The Italian Anarchist Union of the 1920s, dissolved by Mussolini). It is the legacy of the experiences of associations led by comrades who were exiled antifascists, imprisoned, involved in the Spanish Civil War, or in the armed Resistance. The FAI was established in September 1945 in Carrara, where it immediately held its first national congress with delegates from all over Italy. Meanwhile, 'Umanita Nova' was revived. After being censored by the fascists, the weekly newspaper founded by Errico Malatesta resumed publication. The atmosphere at the time was euphoric and filled with hope. The stakes of the libertarian political struggle centered on issues related to reconstruction, union action, and the organization of the movement. Specifically, regarding reconstruction, the following objectives were established: Italian neutrality and the rejection of military expansion; equality for women; direct action against property owners; the pursuit of new, collectively managed systems of production; local financing of reconstruction; and free, open schools. For the movement, however, this was a traumatic transition from the mass activism of the pre-fascist period to a new national and global scenario. The advent of democracy and the republic in Italy, and the Cold War unfolding across all continents, demanded a renewed commitment from libertarians to their anti-totalitarian, anti-capitalist, and anti-militarist convictions.

On Saturday, October 11, and Sunday, October 12, 2025, several study conferences were held at the Teatro Animosi in Carrara to mark the eightieth anniversary of the founding of the FAI (Italian Anarchist Federation) in the city. The event, entitled "Anarchism: A Global and Italian History 1945-2025," brought together some twenty students, researchers, and activists who presented papers on a variety of topics: from the role of anarchism in Republican Italy to the transnational geography of Italian anarchism[...].

The discussion covered both historical and current issues. The discussions on the first day focused on the periods of crisis and dynamism within the anarchist movement, linked to the development of social consciousness and the rise of mass movements. The second day focused on the challenges of new digital technologies, the militaristic and warmongering choices of governments, the environmental crisis, and the development of trans-feminist movements. Sunday afternoon shifted to the relationship with the labor movement, taking a historical perspective and considering the realities of grassroots unionism, anarcho-syndicalism, and what has been termed the new working class.

The event also filled a gap in Italian historiography, which, in its account of social conflicts, has systematically ignored the role of anarchism, and in particular organized anarchism. Similarly, the section dedicated to current events reaffirmed the role of anarchism as a reference point for grassroots movements' struggles and organizational practices, and as a critique of government-not this particular government or that one-but a critique of the social model based on domination, that is, a critique of government itself.

Over these two days, several hundred people attended the conferences. Due to the large turnout, it became necessary to open another screening room at the Teatro di Terra. Delegations from the Iberian Anarchist Federation and the Francophone Anarchist Federation were present at the conferences. The secretariat of the International of Anarchist Federations, unable to attend, sent its warmest greetings.

On Sunday, at the close of the session, a demonstration took place from the Teatro Animosi to Piazza Matteotti, in front of the historic headquarters of the FAI's "Germinal" group. The headquarters is located in the lobby of the Teatro Politeama, which has been closed since 2008 due to structural collapse caused by real estate speculation. On the fence surrounding the building and blocking access, a group of young artists from Carrara created a mural bearing the inscription:

"Federazione Anarchica Italiana - Nostra patria è il mondo intero nostra legge è la libertà"

"Italian Anarchist Federation - Our homeland is the whole world, our law is freedom."

In the evening, the concert "Accordi Libertari" was held at "Fuori Luogo ARCI," which kindly hosted the event. Alessio Lega, Riccardo Dodi, Marchi Marletti, Avanzi di Galera, and the Fatica e Sudore Philharmonic Orchestra staged a captivating show that delighted the large audience. Special thanks to the singers and crew who waived all travel expenses.

Finally, sincere thanks to the members of the group 'Germinal' who ensured the resounding success of the event. In short, Carrara has once again witnessed confirmation that anarchy is harmony, while chaos is that produced by institutions and private property.
