Our appeal comes to you from the heart of Southern Italy, from a vast 
area located on the border between Puglia and Lucania, at a unique 
moment in history when approximately half the world's population lives 
in a climate of war, whether open or creeping, in which millions of 
people are condemned to live oppressed, in conditions of poverty and 
extreme suffering. ---- Wars, in fact, are increasingly shaping the 
destructive capabilities of conflict in a militaristic sense, with the 
use of ever more sophisticated technologies placed at the service of 
global capitalism, responsible for environmental destruction and 
civilian massacres, to the point of committing, amid the indifference or 
complicity of so-called democratic governments, actual genocide.
Our appeal comes to you from a land devoted to peace yet still forced to 
host war exercises, through a widespread and diversified presence of the 
Armed Forces on land, sea, and air: from the military airport of 
Amendola to those of Gioia del Colle, Galatina, and Brindisi, to the 
military port of Taranto; from the numerous military easements located 
throughout Puglia to the shooting ranges in the Alta Murgia National Park.

Our appeal comes to you from a historical and environmental landscape of 
inestimable value, yet still continually plundered and devastated by 
powerful interests and widespread illegality, by indifference and 
institutional responsibility. Seventeen areas have been identified as 
suitable (sic!) for the construction of a single national repository for 
nuclear waste, while the current government fears the absurd intention 
of building new nuclear power plants...

Our appeal seeks to reconnect with the many protest initiatives of 
yesterday and today, and aims to consolidate the wealth of experience 
gained within a rich and diverse movement: from the Gravina-Altamura 
marches to Scanzano Ionico; from the protection of a landscape of stones 
and centuries-old olive trees to the rejection of wars and military 
bases in the area, to the defense of the Adriatic and Ionian coasts from 
the onslaught of concrete and dangerous forms of pollution and degradation.

We address all the women and men committed to defending the quality of 
life and work from the blind and irreversible attacks of the powerful 
and the crafty; to those who practice grassroots politics and aim to 
implement concrete and lasting projects for the benefit of the community.

We address those who oppose old and new forms of colonialism that, with 
brutality and a mockery of every right, appropriate social wealth and 
global energy sources.

We address the women and men who fight against barbed wire borders and 
who reject any form of criminalization against those forced to leave 
their homelands to escape death or hunger.

We address that archipelago of diverse sensibilities that, united, has 
achieved significant successes that, however, remain provisional today. 
This is the case of the Alta Murgia National Park, established over 
twenty years ago but which has not grown as we hoped. Faced with these 
and other open questions, both large and small, we feel the need to 
create another decisive moment of discussion, to socialize and 
strengthen projects and experiences, and to firmly represent them to the 
institutions that govern our territories.

Participating in the Gravina-Altamura March on October 24, 2026, means 
reuniting what power divides: peace, the environment, jobs, freedom of 
movement, and territorial self-determination. To reaffirm our opposition 
to all wars and any form of absurd rearmament, in accordance with 
Article 11 of the Constitution.

From the bottom up, together, for a South that is neither a military 
rearguard nor a landfill, but a space for peace, solidarity, and resistance.
