Iran is facing yet another imperialist war. After stringing the Iranian 
side along with negotiations around its nuclear program, the United 
States and Israel started bombing on 28 February. They have assassinated 
the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and many others at the top 
level of the Iranian regime, caused major damage to air defences and 
missile launching facilities and paid special attention to attacking 
Iran's navy. The assassinations have caused widespread casualties in 
residential areas of a number of Iranian cities and, in one heinous 
example for which neither Israel nor the US have been willing to give an 
explanation, a missile hit a girls' school in the Iranian city of Minab, 
killing 165.

Iran's response has been scattergun - launching rockets and drones at a 
wide range of targets in the region, both military and civilian. 
Hezbollah entered the war on Iran's side, following which Israel has 
invaded Lebanon. The media report rumours of an impending invasion of 
Iran by Kurdish forces from Iraq.

We shed no tears for the Ayatollah Khamenei, because he was a 
bloodthirsty tyrant, responsible for crushing several popular uprisings 
against the Iranian regime. Just in January of this year, he ordered the 
worst massacre in the history of the Islamic Republic, when authorities 
killed thousands in order to crush a wave of massive demonstrations 
calling for his overthrow. We have called before for the Iranian workers 
to overthrow the Ayatollahs and we do so again.

But vengeance for the crimes of Khamenei and his clique of reactionary 
clerics belongs to the working class, not to the United States or 
Israel. Their bombing campaign is not intended to liberate the people of 
Iran, but to subjugate them. US President Trump is sending mixed 
messages about his war aims, so it cannot be said with certainty whether 
he is aiming for the return of the Shah, the emergence of some other 
opposition leader from inside the country, or to find some turncoat 
within the regime to rule Iran on behalf of the US, as has occurred in 
Venezuela. Whatever the mechanism, though, the outcome demanded is for 
Iran to be crushed under the iron heel of US imperialism.

What is to be done?
Workers around the world must come to the defence of the people of Iran 
and attempt to shut down the US and Israeli war machines. In Australia, 
our task is to break the US alliance. Concretely, we need to shut down 
US bases, Australian bases engaged in substantial collaboration with the 
US military and all intelligence facilities that contribute to the US 
military effort. In particular, we need to shut down Pine Gap, which is 
a key element in the global US spy satellite system and supplies 
information to the US and Israel to assist the selection of bombing 
targets. Pine Gap must be deprived of electricity, water, communications 
bandwidth and all categories of supplies.

To achieve this, though, we need to turn around our union movement, 
which is led by a bunch of cowards who cannot defend the organisations 
over which they preside. We need to rebuild the unions and we need to 
build rank and file power in the unions to challenge the officials, who 
are committed to the ALP, which is in turn committed to the alliance 
with the United States. The struggle to defend Iran is part and parcel 
of the struggle to rebuild a fighting union movement in Australia. Touch
