The OSL condemns the recent US attack on Venezuela in the early hours of
Saturday, January 3rd, with bombs and actions by Delta Force forces,
resulting in the kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia
Flores. In addition to the capital Caracas, the states of Miranda,
Aragua, and La Guaira were attacked. We emphasize the gravity of these
events, being the first direct military attack by the US on a South
American country, a continent that has already suffered coups and
interventions with US support. Trump's argument of "narcoterrorism" is
merely a rhetorical farce to justify the invasion.
US imperialism is adopting a line of direct attack on the continent in
order to regain its hegemony and political and economic control in the
region in defense of its geopolitical interests, mainly the control of
Venezuela's vast oil reserves, since the country has the largest oil
reserves in the world. In recent months, Trump has also threatened
incursions into Colombia, another country with a left-leaning
government. This episode reinforces the warning to other Latin American
countries about the limits and fragilities of electoral democracy in
building a project of popular power and resistance to imperialism.
Popular sovereignty and self-determination are only guaranteed by a
people organized in a project of popular and self-managed power aimed at
revolutionary social transformation.
