Official figures indicate that 55,000 Palestinians have died since 
October 2023, more than half of whom are women and children, but the 
real number of deaths is likely to be even higher. In addition, the 
survivors are living with the collapse of the infrastructure of the Gaza 
Strip, completely destroyed by Israel, in addition to a situation of 
hunger and constant bombings. Last week, the Zionist organization 
kidnapped members of the Freedom Flotilla, which intended to deliver 
humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. Among those arrested was 
Brazilian Thiago Ávila, who was placed in solitary confinement before 
being deported to Brazil. Last week, workers from Brazil and around the 
world participated in the Global March for Gaza, with the goal of 
reaching the Egyptian border with Palestine, to denounce the Israeli 
blockade.

The extreme violence committed by the state of Israel, now contested 
even by European political leaders, was not enough to prevent Álvaro 
Damião and other mayors and members of parliament from traveling to the 
Zionist organization, under the pretext of "learning about field-tested 
security technologies." By accepting the invitation from a genocidal 
state, Damião disregards both the ongoing genocide and his own duties 
toward the people of Belo Horizonte. Álvaro Damião ignores that there is 
a strike by education workers with an impressive 96% support — in the 
health sector, a mobilization is also being built that could result in a 
strike.

Seeking surveillance and control policies in the most violent and 
genocidal state in the world, Damião intends to bring to Belo Horizonte 
the same tools of extermination used against the Palestinian people. The 
main targets here are mainly the black youth from the outskirts of Belo 
Horizonte. In this way, Álvaro Damião ignores the genocide committed by 
Israel, legitimizes the kidnapping of Thiago Ávila and stains with blood 
the history of the population of Minas Gerais and the Brazilian people 
who have always fought for freedom. The mayor is not only making a 
political mistake: he is becoming an accomplice to the genocidal state 
of Israel.

The OSL expresses its repudiation of Mayor Álvaro Damião for being yet 
another instrument of the Israeli lobby, at a time when millions around 
the world are denouncing the genocide of the Palestinian people and 
demanding that the country cease hostilities in the region. We call on 
social movements, political organizations and the entire society of Belo 
Horizonte to respond with struggle to the anti-popular policies of the 
current mayor, and to break off diplomatic and commercial relations with 
the State of Israel!
