May started well for Sicilian activism starting from the pleasant event

On the 18th in Catania instead a demonstration of the NoDDL Catania 
network took place. A reality made up of heterogeneous groups born last 
year. This event saw about 150 people depart from Piazza Santa Maria di 
Gesù towards Piazza Stesicoro passing through Piazza Lanza where one of 
the two prisons of Catania is located. The procession saw some 
interesting moments with the use of fireworks as a form of greeting and 
solidarity towards the inmates of the prison in Piazza Lanza, here it 
made a long stop that saw several people take the floor to denounce the 
government's latest attack on everyone's freedom: The Security Decree. 
The area around the prison was protected by an impressive security 
device, with the forces of disorder protecting the structure that is a 
symbol of repression and state violence. During the demonstration there 
were some moments of tension, a traffic policeman was injured during 
some phases of the protest and was taken to the Garibaldi hospital for 
checks, some hotel windows and appliance shops were damaged. The 
procession then concluded in Piazza Stesicoro as planned with a reduced 
number of participants compared to the start.

There were also meetings and marches related to the defense of the 
territory and against the large useless works that only serve the 
propaganda of the small parties and governments of the moment and their 
friends in the mafia:

May 18 and 19 saw the annual NoPonte weekend in Messina with a series of 
events, discussions and working tables with a large multitude of 
activists and different realities working together for a stable and 
strong resistance project.

Also on May 18, the 45th anniversary of the Marcia dello Zingaro was 
celebrated, at the Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro, this year 
included in the events for the System of Protected Natural Areas of the 
Sicilian Region. During the event, Franco Russo was remembered, one of 
the main architects of the "march" in the 80s, who recently passed away. 
This event also comes as a response to the latest statements of that 
squalid character who seems to have come out of the stories of 
Camilleri, Renato Schifani (president of the Region), who during the BIT 
event in Milan (9-11 February 2025), the International Tourism Exchange, 
thought it best to declare one of his latest psychotic ideas "a highway

crossing the Zingaro Nature Reserve".

Still in the context of Palermo, on 23 May 2025 a demonstration was 
called to remember the victims of the Capaci massacre. This saw protests 
in via Notarbartolo with protests for the anticipated minute of silence 
and many people who shouted "Shame, hands off Falcone. They were afraid 
of the young people of Palermo", referring to the young people who were 
arriving with a different procession that would have joined the people 
already in via Notarbartolo.

On May 25th we return to Catania where over 5000 people took part in a 
large demonstration to ask for a stop to the genocide and to show 
support and solidarity with the Palestinian people still besieged by the 
Zionist entity of the apartheid state of Israel. The only negative note 
was the presence of two small and shameful flags of the PD (party of 
democracy) heavily colluded in its politics and rhetoric with the 
Zionist state. These squalid characters were contested by many but 
unfortunately they did not go away. Sometimes you have to ask yourself 
if it is better not to be part of some demonstrations because of certain 
hateful presences like PD and ugly company or to overshadow them with 
the massive presence of activists who truly care about the Palestinian 
cause not for propaganda reasons but for questions of internationalist 
and human solidarity.

What is the point of all this activism and all these protests and 
commemorations? To remind us who we are, to wake up, to promote social 
and political changes also through action, often in response to 
injustices or violations of human rights or our territories. Activism 
consists in acting to bring about changes in society, politics, economy, 
culture, the environment but also and above all in ourselves.

Sicilian activism is not over, and we will all meet on June 2nd at 4:00 
pm, Largo Mascione in Niscemi, for the march against war. NOMUOS!!!
