(en) UK, ACG, Jackdaw 22 - Militarism and the Environment (ca, de, it, pt, tr) [machine translation]

Militarism is the State's use of armed forces and weapons to maintain and extend its power and control over resources and people. It is about maintaining the power and wealth of the ruling class through domination, destruction, and death. The military uses a huge amount of resources and destroys the environment in their training, weapons testing and war itself. According to the Conflict and Environment Observatory: "We estimate that militaries are responsible for 5.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions globally, however military emissions reporting to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is poor."1
Militaries also need large areas of land and sea, whether for bases and facilities, or for testing and training. Military lands are believed to cover between 1-6% of the global land surface. In many cases these are ecologically important areas. For example in Britain: "On 1 April 2024, the total UK land holdings for the MOD was 342,000 hectares (1.4% of the total UK land mass)."2 This includes Northumberland National Park of which 23% is owned by the MOD.
Militarism is a blind spot for many environmentalists, however, who ignore its toll of death, destruction, and waste. This failure to see the (armed) elephant in the room is probably down to their acceptance of the State as natural and necessary. Apparently there are moves within the military to make themselves 'green' in terms of energy use. Pass the sickbag - the only thing that will ever be green about the military is their camouflage!
For more information about the military's role in the ecological crisis, see this report by the Conflict and Environment Observatory: Rising military spending will undermine global climate action unless we act now.
