(en) Brazil, OSL: Another step forward in the struggle of the Moinho Favela! (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The community achieves a major victory, but remains mobilized to ensure
that the government keeps its promise ---- The achievement announced
in recent days - an agreement that guarantees a subsidy from the federal
and state governments for housing for more than 800 families - is a
direct result of the direct collective, independent and combative action
of the residents themselves, who firmly and organizedly faced
repression, neglect and empty promises. ---- It was through concrete
struggles on the streets, without giving priority to closed-door
meetings in offices or the "battle of legal documents", that the
Tarcísio government was put in check, one of the few recent popular
confrontations that achieved a real victory in the face of the
intransigence of the state government. What forced the retreat was not
the benevolence of the federal government or of actors outside the
community, but rather popular resistance to police violence, attempts at
demobilization and lies from the mainstream media.
It is important to remember that the federal government, which owns the
land, took too long to act. The urgency of the situation demanded
immediate responses, not the silence and slowness that lasted for
months, while the Military Police harassed residents, demolished houses
and terrorized families.
Amid the confrontation, there were countless declarations of victory
made at inappropriate times by government satellites, who put themselves
ahead of the community's leading role in the conquest and were soon
contradicted by the brutality of the police and the CDHU. The
celebration is legitimate and solidarity is decisive, but those who
experience the situation first-hand know that nothing is guaranteed
without constant vigilance from the people themselves and the leading
role of those who are in their homes every day. The residents of Moinho
remain mobilized and vigilant - because no agreement is worth anything
if it comes with repression, forced removal or territorial exclusion.
Many promises have been broken over all these years, and throughout this
period the community has not let its guard down. The victory will only
be complete when every resident is living in their homes. An important
battle has been won, but the war is ongoing.
The Mill shows that it is possible to win with active class solidarity -
without losing sight of the fact that the most important thing is the
organized, independent and firm favela that paves the way for a
dignified life. May this struggle serve as an example for the entire
popular and union movement, showing that in the face of the
intransigence of capital and the State, only collective struggle and
organization can win!
