(en) Canada, Collectif Emma Goldman - (Federal Elections) "Everything must change so that nothing changes" - Giuseppe Tomasi Di Lampedusa (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Since the beginning of the confederation, two parties have exchanged power. One party alternates between wielding power and the other embodying change, since their main quality is not being the other. Poilievre was therefore convinced that his turn was imminent, but he hadn't anticipated the threats emanating from his southern neighbor, nor that his more than 20-point lead in the polls would vanish as quickly as snow in the sun. What better than a banker, more conservative than liberal, to replace a prime minister whose main quality was initially being the son of a former prime minister? The business community is reassured, the status quo is preserved, and the illusion of change is fulfilled. Some will tell us that Carney's arrival may have saved us from a mini-Trump. Although rather beige and far from breaking with neoliberal policies, he won't question abortion, and the LGBTQIA2S+ community can certainly breathe a little easier. But what about everything else? What program will he cut to increase the defense budget to 2 percent? How will accelerating energy and mining projects help us respond to the climate emergency? Some will be content with the fact that at least he's not a climate skeptic, but still. And what about his position on immigration, reduced to a mere labor force... and on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, which he pays little attention to, the 50,000 people killed by bombs from Tel Aviv government planes? (At least he's not threatening to defund universities by exploiting anti-Semitism.) History will judge them for doing nothing in the face of what has all the hallmarks of genocide. We cannot resign ourselves to choosing between more or less environmental consequences, between more or less government and more or less repression. Democracy, true democracy, is direct; it doesn't consist of choosing the lesser of two evils. We have nothing to expect from these elections. In the aftermath of this election, tenants, workers, and the working classes must become essential. Let's make sure our voices are louder than those of the business community, that they are heard beyond this 36-day period.
