(en) Italy, FAI, Umanita Nova: When does the State ever condemn itself? (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Never, exactly. This is undeniable. Even when a criminal trial is held
against police officers - whether they are policemen, carabinieri or
prison officers as in this case - and even when sentences are issued,
these are always ridiculous and undersized compared to the gravity of
the crimes committed. ---- The brutal beating of a defenseless prisoner
committed by a group of officers in the Reggio prison and the
falsification of evidence to be able to claim that they were defending
themselves from an attack (ten against one!) led to ridiculous
sentences, without even a mention in the criminal record. In short, no
consequences, they will return to service. The charge was torture, they
got away with an abuse of power. The newspapers say that the initial
charge has been "restructured". That must be a Newspeak term for
"ridiculed". But torture is not only about irons and electric wires.
Violence, both physical and psychological, carried out by people in
uniform, in a pack, against a person who cannot defend themselves and
who will remain terrified well beyond the act itself, is torture. And
don't tell us that they are individual violent agents: it is a system.
A system that protects its members: it is certainly not the first time
in Italy that police violence receives the equivalent of a slap on the
cheek, but today this is happening while with the security bill the far
right in government provides for an abnormal increase in penalties for
any form of social opposition. Those who oppose war, exploitation,
environmental devastation and many other injustices are treated like
criminals and risk very heavy sentences. Not only that. In our city as
in other cities, you can be kicked out of the red zones at the
discretion of the police, especially if you belong to categories that
are "undesirable" for those in power and the right-thinking. Those who
commit real violence, if they are part of the police force, are rarely
charged, and even if they are convicted, they come out unscathed.
We are not calling for prison for guilty police officers. We, who
identify with anarchist ideals, have never liked prison, but we like
injustice and double standards even less.
Today more than ever, opposing war, exploitation and injustice is necessary.
Opposing repression and police violence is vital.
