(en) Brazil, UNIPA, #81 - March 8: For the Revolutionary Fury of Women against patriarchy, capitalism and the State! (ca, de, it, pt, tr) [machine translation]

March 8 is International Working Women's Day. On this date, we recall
the memory of the struggles of working women during the Russian
Revolution, when they took to the streets for "Bread and Peace". March 8
is a day of struggle and remembrance for all those who died so that we
could achieve the rights we have today. We remember some women of the
people, such as Dandara dos Palmares, Rosa da Fonseca, the mothers who
boldly insist on confronting the State every day for justice, the
indigenous and quilombola women who sacrifice their bodies-territories
in defense of their peoples.
Working women have developed a great participation in different spaces
of struggle, such as the defense of indigenous and quilombola
territories, in the defense of urban housing, on barricades and in
strikes. Women play important roles in the organization of society and
in the struggle of the working class.
Working women perform multiple tasks, both in paid work that provides
them with a livelihood and in unpaid activities such as domestic work.
In addition to this work, given the patriarchal structure, we
experience, to a greater extent than men, activities involving caring
for children, sick people, the elderly, or even taking care of
maintaining a functional home, such as cooking, washing dishes and
clothes, and cleaning the house. According to PNAD, a survey conducted
by IBGE in 2022, employed women spent an average of 9.6 hours per week
more than men on domestic chores and/or caring for people. Also
according to the survey of the total group of employed (or not) women,
those who perform the most domestic chores are black women.
Domestic work in the home itself is an unpaid service. It is unpaid
work. But it is essential for reproducing the living conditions of the
entire working class, allows for replenishment of energy and rest for
the next day of work, and allows for the raising of children, the future
workers of society. According to data from IBGE, in 2022, 47% of women
are out of the "job market", because many of them do not have time to
dedicate themselves to paid work compared to the time spent on household
chores.
Years go by and some issues are repeated, such as the wage gap between
men and women. According to data from Dieese, employed women in 2023
received 22.3% less than men, and women with higher education received
35.5% less than men. Black women receive 50.2% less than white men.
Thus, labor exploitation occurs differently between women and men and is
also marked by race.
Women's struggle is a struggle against the State, capitalism and patriarchy!
We, black women, women from the outskirts, quilombolas, and indigenous
peoples, do not have a day off. Every day we wake up and start the fight
against capitalism and against the State that insists on killing our
black, indigenous, and poor children. The same capitalism that consumes
our hours of life through labor exploitation and that has as its
accomplice the State that does not guarantee our rights, allowing us,
our partners, and daughters to be constantly exploited. We add our
voices for the end of the 6x1 work shift that most of us are subjected
to and that we women experience in such an inhumane way, given the many
other activities imposed on us by the patriarchy.
The State is a capitalist, patriarchal, racist, and colonial body. The
right-wing and left-wing governments that administer this body have
shown how little the State cares about women. Right-wing governments
openly repudiate women. The Lula/PT government is trying to disguise the
patriarchy present in the State by having women participate in its
government, as Dilma/PT did by having Kátia Abreu/Progressistas in her
government. Thus, the experience with the PT governments shows that it
is necessary to break with the imperial feminism that seeks to integrate
and accommodate women within the interests of the State. The
incorporation of these women into the State is the capitulation of
female leaders to the patriarchal, racist and colonial State.
In 2024, at least 1,387 women were murdered for reasons related to
gender, an average of four femicides per day. Brazil continues to be the
country with the highest number of transfemicides, with transvestites
and trans women accounting for 97% of cases. Changes in government,
regardless of race, have not substantially reduced the rates of femicide
and transfemicide, as this is a cultural issue that cannot be resolved
solely by changes in legislation, but rather by combating it through
popular movements. We see some issues regarding self-determination of
our bodies being forgotten, such as the fight for the right to abortion,
which leads thousands of us women to death. Our task as fighters who
will take to the streets on March 8 is to strengthen the movements and
abandon illusions about governments and the State. In this sense,
women's struggle must also be a struggle against the State.
We understand that the solution will be made by and for us, women of the
people, by developing networks of mutual support, self-defense
committees in places of study, housing and work, paving the way to
overcome capitalist exploitation and the various forms of oppression
that plague us. This revolutionary construction begins by creating our
autonomy, our struggle, our organizations, and not by strengthening the
power of the State and the capitalists.
So, what are we fighting for?
We fight for the liberation of the people, which necessarily involves
the liberation of women! We demand: a) public and community daycare
centers, restaurants and laundries to collectivize domestic work and
remove the burden of work, freeing up hours and conditions for women to
organize and fight; b) equal pay for women compared to men and measures
to generate their own income for women, allowing for greater respect and
financial independence; c) exemplary punishment against harassment in
the workplace and prevention; d) mutual support homes for helpless
women, victims of violence and unemployment; measures to prevent abuse
and harassment on the streets, such as public lighting and more adequate
transportation; organization of committees for personal and collective
self-defense.
THE WOMEN'S STRUGGLE IS THE PEOPLE'S STRUGGLE AGAINST CAPITAL AND THE STATE!
