(en) Germany, Karlsruhe, ANIKA: Rally in memory of the victims of National Socialism - report (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Thu, 27 Feb 2025 09:13:10 +0200

On the evening of January 25, 2025, a rally in memory of the victims of National Socialism took place on the Karlsruhe market square. Around 150 people came together around the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp to commemorate the countless victims of German fascism. The perspectives of several Holocaust survivors, those who died in the Holocaust and their descendants were presented. Video contributions were shown and speech manuscripts and letters were read out. In addition to the Jewish victims, various groups of victims had their say, such as Sinti, queer people or people who were persecuted by the National Socialists because of several characteristics. The event attracted great interest from passers-by, many of whom joined the rally.

The rally established a connection between the past and the lessons to be learned from it and today's political developments, which make it clear that the portrayal of Germany as the "world champion of remembrance" is unfortunately far from reality. The statement NEVER AGAIN must not remain just a phrase used by politicians at wreath-laying ceremonies, but must be followed by actions that protect marginalized groups and individuals from violence, discrimination and inhumane behavior. The rise of extreme right-wing and misanthropic ideologies far into the supposed "middle of society" and the inhumane politics that go with it are a reality in the Federal Republic.

That is why it is particularly important to really remember what the vast majority of the German population was capable of during the Nazi era. Commemoration and confrontation with perpetrators' biographies in one's own family are central components of anti-fascist practice so that the past remains in the past.

In today's times, we are concerned with resisting inhumane movements, ideas and parties. Therefore, today and in the future, it is even more important to keep reminding people where anti-Semitism, racism and contempt for humanity can lead.

We say firmly: NEVER AGAIN!
