(en) France, UCL AL #352 - Culture, Reading Olivier Thomas and Pascal Glénot: Bourdieu, an Algerian investigation (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Tue, 15 Oct 2024 08:08:32 +0300

It is not always easy to dare to delve into difficult books. Fortunately, comics are a popularization medium that sometimes allows for great success. Thus, Thiphaine Rivière adopts - very freely - La Distinction[1]by Pierre Bourdieu, a remarkable essay on tastes and lifestyles. ---- She imagines a philosophy teacher who seeks to introduce his students to the sociologist's theory, and first encounters their indifference, before they gradually get caught up in the game, questioning their family about their eating habits, for example, until they understand how much "the dominant classes consciously or unconsciously participate in establishing a system that makes the transition from one class to another excessively difficult". Without ever falling into caricature, her characters are rather convincing.

For their part, Olivier Thomas and Pascal Génot investigated in Algeria on the trail of Pierre Bourdieu who, as a young graduate of the École Normale Supérieure, was called up there to do his military service, assigned, thanks to his diplomas and connections, to the information service. Bourdieu always remained very modest about this experience which nevertheless changed his life. He returned there to teach, after his demobilization and until the end of the war, then abandoning philosophy for sociology which he apprehended at the same time as the reality of the transformations of a rural society that he discovered and which was not without reminding him of his own origins.

This biography offers at the same time a history, succinct but dense, of the Algerian War and sociology. A very enriching read, moreover.
