(en) Holland, vrije bond: Flyer action Close VION!

Date Thu, 18 Nov 2021 08:03:06 +0200

On Friday 19 November, the Labour working group of the Vrije Bond, in collaboration with the action group Sluit VION!, will once again hold a flyer campaign in front of the gate of the largest slaughterhouse in the Netherlands. ---- This flyer campaign is part of a long-term campaign of the Labour Working Group with the aim of informing migrant workers about their legal position and combating the exploitation of labour migrants. In the Netherlands, some 500,000 migrant workers work through temporary employment agencies and the conditions with which many of these workers have to deal remain unacceptable and researchers, journalists, activists and trade unions increasingly use the term modern slavery. Ser recently published a report in which the meat processing, distribution centres and seasonal agriculture and horticulture sectors are the most abusive sectors, especially for migrant workers.

Close VION! is concerned about the treatment of the workers who work at VION. They are also very worried about all the animals that are unnecessarily slaughtered here. About the well-being and health of local residents. The environment - locally and elsewhere - that is polluted. The campaign wants to change that: Close VION!

Important arguments, to hand out flyers to migrant workers in front of the gate of the slaughterhouse, include the continuing unacceptable conditions of these workers, which despite the crocodile tears of policymakers and government reports ending up in drawers, does not improve at all. In addition to the loud cry for the abolition of the meat industry.

It still happens far too often that real estate operators (and employers in close consultation with temporary employment agencies) impose unsafe and poor housing on migrant workers. There is no option, partly because migrant workers are dependent on temporary employment agencies via the all-inclusive package that is offered. The compulsory linking of work and income to housing could be called modern slavery.

Migrant workers from Poland, Hungary and Romania, among others, have to pay a fortune for a roof over their heads. They live in an impoverished house or building. The residential locations are often in the hands of the temporary employment agency for which they work. These locations often do not meet the established minimum requirements.

Working conditions and payments
Migrant workers are put under great pressure during their work (i.m.e. targets), receive absolute minimum wages, do not know exactly how many hours they can work where, are told the same day whether or not they should work and often change employers. If the migrants already have the courage to complain, they will lose their jobs and their homes.

Meat industry
Close VION! is an initiative that envisages not only the closure of this slaughterhouse but the abolition of the entire intensive livestock farming. It is now clear that everyone in the world is aware of all the benefits if the meat industry is abolished.

More than enough reasons to inform the migrant workers of their rights. Migrant workers are entitled to a full income, accommodation and health conditions like all other people in this society. In recent years, it has become clear that employers, the temporary employment sector and the government will not ensure equal treatment and living/working conditions, and migrant workers will therefore be treated as second-class citizens. So CLOSE VION! And stop the exploitation of all migrant workers!

The reason for this flyer campaign is that we do not accept second-class citizens and environmental destruction. Do you have the same conviction and would you like to join this action in Boxtel?
