A-Infos (en) Strike at a Conrad Black paper

Workers at The St. Catharines Standard (in southern Ontario, Canada) 
went on strike just after midnight, Friday, May 22.

Already, some scabs have crossed the picket lines. The paper is also 
soliciting freelance writers to send copy via e-mail. And, I hear workers 
may be brought in from other papers owned by Hollinger Inc. and Southam Inc.

The Standard is owned by Southam. Hollinger is a major shareholder. 
Conrad Black is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of both
Southam and Hollinger. (Former British prime minister Maggie Thatcher and 
former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger are listed as Senior 
International Advisors of Hollinger, by the way...)

For those in the area, the strike office is at 15 James St. downtown. The 
Standard is located at 17 Queen Street, a block or so away. The picket 
line is usually up Monday to Friday and Saturday until Noon. There will 
also be occasional pickets at the printing plant, which is owned by 
Hollinger, in nearby Welland, on East Main Street, downtown.

Workers are considering the possibility of a strike paper starting the 
end of May or so, depending on how the strike goes. There are a variety 
of issues, mostly relating to unreasonable management demands for pay 
freezes and cuts. I'll go into those at a later time.
