The Scab Ship Columbus Canada is still anchored in or nearthe harbor of
Long Beach as of very early morning Wednesday, May 13.
No cargo has been unloaded as of now.
It may try to enterthe harbor again or it may sail toward it's next
destination, which is scheduled to be Oakland, but given what happened
with the Neptune Jade, the shipping companies may try to send it
elsewhere?
We do not know at this point. Stay on stand by alert for now. Remember
to call (510) 845-0540 for updates. If you've called us and left contact
info, we have got it. We haven't called everyone back because we're all
volunteers and quite busy. Thanks for your solidarity and patience.
Be prepared to call your fellow workers, friends and allies. We'll need
all the help we can get.
Also, be prepared to deal with other scab ships that may git the coast
from Australia. The Columbus Canada is only the first. I do not know for
sure how many more may be on the way to any west-coast port, or Hawaii
for that matter.
On another note, it's quite possible that the number of picketers in Long
Beach was never 1500, but probably closer to 400. Mark Twain once said
that a lie can travel half-way around the world before the truth even gets
it's boots on. Not to discourage anyone, 400 is a great turnout, but
let's not get complacent.
Also, we got a cryptic phone message telling us that the Columbus Canada
is not owned by Blue Star as is stated on the ILWU website (I haven't seen
the site, so I cannot verify what is actually stated there) but rather
Columbus lines. The caller left no name or return contact information. I
have no idea who this person represented or was connected to.
Recall that Yusen Terminals & Hapag Lloyd tried to deny any connection to
MH&DC in Liverpool...
That's all for now. Good luck everyone...
