Demonstrations in Sweden on May 9th, 1998
Saturday the 9th of March saw a number of demonstrations in Sweden.
In the town of Linköping an anti-fascist demonstration was held with 300
militant participants. Linköping has been the scene of a number of
fascist attacks against homosexuals and leftists during the past months
which all began with a brutal nazi attack on the Crystal Night
demonstration last November 9th. The nazi music organisation Nördland
has a space in this town and this was the subject of today's
demonstrators anger. However, 150 riot police made their presence felt.
In Stockholm 2 000 anti-abort Christian wackos demonstrated for the
"right to life." Approximately 50 anarcha-feminists heckled the
Christians as they began their short march to hold an appeal outside of
the closed buildings of parliament. Most of the Christians were bussed
in from outside of Stockholm and the German and English language were
heard spoken throughout their ranks. In previous years the
ultra-right-wing Christian sect "Livets Ord" has been able to arrange
similar marches with up to 10 000 participants. Their influence seems to
be waning.
An anti-fascist demonstration with 200 militant participants was held in
Stockholm today as a reminder of the victory over nazi Germany and an
end to the second World War in Europe. The demonstration occurred
without incident although the police presence was considered unusually
large for a demonstration that had a legal permit.
Later in the day in Stockholm anti-pornography activists held a series
of happenings across the central city in protest against the three
existing bordellos openly operating here
and their mobile advertising trucks which have recently began rolling
again - after the last eight have been destroyed in arson attacks.
