Police Attack MayDay in Malmö, Sweden
The anarcho-autonome demonstration in Malmö in southern Sweden was
attacked by riot police on Friday the first of May, 1998.
137 activists were arrested and 16 of these are still being held on
charges of inciting to riot and one on charges of hitting a mounted
police in the face with a cobblestone.
Paroles at the demonstration were amongst others "Against the European
Fort and Schengen Treaty" and "Against the Police, Protectors of the
Rich". The demonstration was stopped by rows of riot police shortly
after beginning and a tense stand off atmosphere was created. An
individual later identified as a civilian-clothed policeman threw a
bottle towards the police lines and that was the signal for an
unexpected mounted charge following brutal baton charge.
The demonstrators defended themselves as best as possible with stones
and fireworks but were soon overwhelmed by the superior armed forces of
the police. One mounted police was photographed bleeding extensively in
the face.
Participators who escaped being arrested, on-lookers and the local
population in this city of 300 000 have been very supportive of the
demonstrators and the arrested. Pictures of the Malmö police's brutal
attack of a peaceful anti-pornography demonstration less than two months
ago are still easy to remember. On the contrary, the media has blindly
reported the polices fantasy version of this occurrence.
In Sweden, MayDay celebrations have in the past always been without
troubles.. This year, with provocations in Stockholm and this attack in
Malmö, the Swedish police, with the newly ratified Schengen treaty as
support, have taken the first steps towards their own version of a
Swedish totalitarian state.
