PRESS RELEASE 1 May 1998

Illegal raid of Pickled Herring Lunch at Kafé 44!

On Friday May 1st, Stockholms Police attacked the, by the Swedish
Anarchist magazine Brand, organised yearly pickled herring lunch at Kafé
44 on Södermalm.

Kafé 44 is an open-to-the-public café as well as a small bookstore.

The magazine Brand is celebrating it's 100 year anniversary this weekend
and the pickled herring lunch was the first in a series of events
launching the Brand Festival which will continue throughout the weekend
of the 2nd and 3rd of May.

The pickled herring lunch is a traditional family affair held on the
first of May which, since it's beginning, has never been the cause of
troubles. During the course of the day 500 individuals were served the
traditional meal. At 17:40, as the days activities were winding to a
close, the premises were stormed, without warning, by 150 riot police.
Several individuals were beaten with batons and everyone was forced up
against the wall, including an eight year old girl. With determined
consequence the police refused to give an explanation to what was
happening during the entire procedure. After a harsh and degrading body
search all of the approximately 100 remaining guests were forced to
leave the premises. The police have afterwards said that they suspected
that there were explosives in the space. And of course, after the
following two hour long search was completed, no explosives were to be
found.

We look upon the supposed hunt for explosives as nothing more than an
excuse for the Stockholms Police Corp to harass people from the
libertarian left who celebrated the Mayday at Kafé 44.

During this weekends Brand Festival people from the entire country and
beyond will listen to lectures about the history of the Swedish
anarchist movement and Brand as well as be entertained by amongst others
Stefan Sundström, Kajsa Grytt and Theatre Srant. We hope that these
festivities can continue without further police provocation.

We of course will bring charges of these happenings to Justice Attorney
and demand economic damages as the police consciously tried to destroy
our festival. We even demand that the police give a public apology for
their actions.
