On December 3, 1997, Montreal's anti-riot police surrounded and arrested
108 people in front of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel.  These people spent
between 13 and 20 hours in custody. Two of them spent 9 days in jail
awaiting a bail review hearing. And yet, the real crime is the growing gap
between rich and poor at a time when large banks and corporations are
making record profits.  If the police succeed in intimidating a small group
of anti-poverty activists, it will go on to use the same tactics against
other groups in our society: students, unemployed people, workers and
anyone who protests against injustice.


We, the undersigned, demand:
· that charges against anti-hunger demonstrators be dropped;
· that the police stop resorting to repressive practices that are more and
more systematically used against the poor and activists;
· that prosecutors and judges stop the practice of criminalizing the poor
and activists;
· the complete respect of the Charter of Rights and Liberties by all
representatives of the political order;
· that the right to protest and to organize ourselves against poverty and
exclusion be respected.
