Free University is a teach-in, speak-out and direct action which will take
a critical and creative look at education. There will be participatory
workshops and panels on a wide range of topics, including youth
unemployment and welfare, student loans and debt, free skools, alternative
education, dropping out (rising above), the corporatization of education,
the MAI, radical youth and student activism, women and education,
squatting, cheap housing, making slingshots and more ...
Free University is also a symbolic reclaiming of space as we temporarily
occupy the public areas of SFU's corporate-dominated downtown campus. We
hope to transform what is normally a staid and sterile corporate space
into a venue for genuine debate, dialogue and the exchange of views on
issues that matter to us all.
The Free University idea comes out of the recent protests against APEC at
UBC when students occupied two campus buildings in order to present a
teach-in and speak-out on issues related to corporate globalization. More
generally, Free University is inspired by a history of resistance by those
who are critical of institutionalized education and who wish to pursue
real alternatives.
