CONSULTA ON NEZ(S)N REGIONAL MEETING IN SYRACUSE, NY
(See below for questions; please clip, answer, and send back)

Issued on February 19, 1998
Please respond by February 28.

There is a proposal to hold a north east regional meeting of groups and
individuals who have been focusing their political interest and energy on
the Zapatistas, Chiapas, and Mexico. (This includes north east Canada and
the United States.) This proposed regional meeting has evolved out of an
idea to create a "North East Zapatista Network." There has been some debate
about the name of this network, with one alternative being the North East
Zapatista (Solidarity) Network. As yet no permament name has been agreed
upon.

One suggested project for this network is to hold a north east regional
encuentro/gathering/conference that addresses the Zapatistas, Chiapas, and
Mexico, but that also addresses the Zapatista-inspired initiative to create
networks of struggle "Against Neoliberalism and For Humanity." (This has
been discussed at two Intercontinental gatherings, and at numerous
continental, national, regional, and local "encuentros" within the last few
years.) Background information, including the original NEZN proposal and
subsequent statements, can be found at this web site:
http://zapnet.rootmedia.org

NY Zapatistas, of New York City, originally proposed that this regional
meeting take place here. But at its weekly meeting on February 17, NY
Zapatistas withdrew that proposal and agreed to support the idea of holding
this meeting in Syracuse, New York. Brian Dominick of Rootmedia in Syracuse
has indicated that people there are prepared to host such a regional
meeting. NY Zapatistas also agreed to support April 18 as a date for this
meeting.

One of the purposes of this "consulta," or survey, is to see the extent of
support for this north east regional meeting in Syracuse. Another purpose
is to help people in Syracuse hosting the meeting to get a better sense of
how many people to expect. Another purpose is to begin collectively
thinking about an agenda. If you are unfamiliar with this notion of
"consulta", note that it is a process that the Zapatistas and their
supporters (us) have used on a number of occasions as a means to make
better informed decisions.

Please take the few minutes that it will take to answer these questions
below and return to zapnet@rootmedia.org by February 28, 1998.

Reminder: If you are not subscribed to the listserv where planning for this
regional meeting can take place, please subscribe to nezn@tao.ca

Send an email message to: majordomo@tao.ca
Leave subject line and signature blank
In body of message write: subscribe nezn

Finally, it is particularly important to get responses to this consulta
from existing groups like the Zapatista Direct Solidarity Committee in
Montreal, Mainers for Democracy in Mexico, the Vermont Chiapas Action
Network, Tonantzin and others in Boston, the Zapatista Alliance of
Pittsburgh, as well as from others who are in newly formed groups.

- Stefan Wray, NY Zapatistas

several listservs and to several Cc: lists for which there is some overlap.
