A funny thing happend in burlington vermont today.

There was a march and rally to protest the seemingly imminent bombing 
of Iraq and continued sanctions.  Close to 200 people marched from 
the University to the Federal Building (yes, we knew it would be 
closed.) Food Not Bombs was there of course with yummy food.

Then we marched through the streets of our small new england "city" and
decided to go to the Burlington Free Press (Gannett) Building, a favorite
spot for the rare protest.

While there, unknown to us prior but leaked by some reporters who came out
of the building, Attorney General Janet Reno was inside meeting with our
Senaotr Leahy(who opposes land mines but not dropping nuclear material
out of planes or shooting it into space). I guess it was a complete fluke.
And we almost had the march tomorrow, Tuesday.

Well, some of us realized we had some things to say to her, so we wnet
inside.  I think what happened was that secureity and a few local cops
kept the masses out, but we quiclky went around to all the other exits we
knew of.  Then we noteced that indeed there were Secret Service looking
goons all over.  For about an half hour to an hour we kept her from
leaving the building and any cops or SS form leaving as well.  Then an SS
guy decided to drive away regardless of people standing in front of his
car.  The cops got him to stop i guess before anyone was hurt.

Finally they arrested a guy in the building and brought him out to the cop
car, but we wouldnt let them leave.  The standoff got more and more tense,
until after a while they pepper sprayed somone directly in the eyes who
was lying down in front of and under the car..  We were more determined to
keep our comrade from being taken away.  They only way they did it was by
bringing in cops from two neighboring towns until they could match our
numnbers, and then just throwing us out of the way over and over.  

And what happened to Janet?  If you guessed that they wisked her out where
the newspaper trucks go out while they were distracting us wth all this
silliness, you win a green post-it pad.


We almost cought up to her at the airport but were probably 15 minutes
late.

Analysis:  The main problems were that we let ourselves get cought up in
the cops'  games, forgetting that they were not taking us to the brink of
an imprealist war.  We were not a cohesive bunch, not eveyone all that
excited about non-violence.   And the whole thing was sort of unorganized.

Results: I wonder if this was picked up by CBS/NBC/ABC affiliates?  I
doubt it, but itd be good to know.  At least we know that Janet will take
a message back to D.C.
