Prison Radio (a project of the Quixote Center) challenges
mass incarceration and racism by airing the voices of men
and women in prison. Our educational materials serve as a
catalyst for public activism.

May 1989 Prison Radio produces "You Can't Jail the Spirit",
13 one-hour documentaries on political prisoners.
April 1992 Prison Radio produces "The Death Penalty and the
Execution of Robert Alton Harris" 12 hours of round the clock
coverage of the first execution in California in 25 years. Winner
NFCB Golden Reel.
July 1992 Prison Radio records Mumia Abu-Jamal's first radio
commentaries in 11 years at Huntingdon State Prison, PA's death
row.
Jan. 1994 Prison Radio produces an investigative report on
Joanne Walker, a woman with AIDS at Chowchilla State Prison, the
largest women's prison in the world.
April 1994 NPR's "All Things Considered" hires Mumia as a
regular commentator.
May 1994 NPR supresses Mumia's commentaries at the behest of
Bob Dole and the Fraternal Order of Police.
June 1994 Noelle Hanrahan begins work with Equal Justice
USA/Quixote Center.
July 1994 Equal Justice & Prison Radio initiate the
publication of Mumia's essays, Live From Death Row.
May 1995 Prison Radio initiates the book Race for Justice
(Common Courage Press).
June 1995 Pacifica radio broadcasts Mumia speaking from his
prison cell on the day his warrant is delivered.
March 1996 The law firm of Bernabei and Katz file suit
against "All Things Considered" and NPR on behalf of Mumia and
Prison Radio for failing to air the commentaries as promised.
July 1996 HBO airs John Edgington's brilliant documentary,
"Mumia Abu-Jamal: A Case for Reasonable Doubt?" featuring Prison
Radio recordings of Mumia.
Oct. 1996 Prison Radio records 13 of what may be the last
prison essays by Mumia.
Nov. 1996 The State of Pennsylvania eliminates all press
contact with Mumia.
Jan. 1997 Prison Radio moves to West Coast office.
Feb. 1997 Pacifica Radio airs new commentaries. One million
listeners hear Mumia reading new essays.
WRTI Radio, Temple University and its network of stations,
bans the broadcast; Mumia's voice is silenced throughout
Pennsylvania.
Aug. 1997 Prison Radio becomes a full-fledged project at the
Quixote Center. Noelle leaves Equal Justice USA staff to
coordinate the project.
Sept. 1997 Over 100 radio stations air Prison Radio's audio
documentary of the film "Mumia Abu-Jamal: A Case for Reasonable
Doubt?"
Jan. 1998 Mumia's essays are released on Compact Disc.
Alternative Tentacles, one of the world's pre-eminent punk
labels, features Mumia's essays on a split release compact disc
with the Southern California punk band Man Is the Bastard.
