POLICE, ACTIVISTS CLASH AT GERMAN EXTREMISTS' MEET
_________________________________________________________________

     02:29 p.m Feb 07, 1998 Eastern

PASSAU, Germany, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Police detained around 60
activists on Saturday after clashes outside the venue of a
congress of the right-wing extremist National Democratic Party of
Germany (NPD).

Police said the number of temporary detentions was split
almost evenly between NPD supporters and leftists who gathered to
protest against the congress in the Bavarian town of Passau.

Members of the opposing camps attacked one another and
police were also the targets of violence.

Some of the NPD supporters were detained for displaying
banned symbols such as those of Hitler's SS elite fighting force.
Police also recovered baseball bats and knives.

The anti-NPD protesters, estimated to number around 2,000,
held a rally to voice their opposition to the meeting.

They also tried to stop the party's supporters entering the
congress hall, some throwing bottles and stones. Some of the
4,000 NPD supporters needed police protection and police
repeatedly scuffled with demonstrators.

Two police officers and several activists were slightly
injured, police said. Demonstrators also vandalised cars and
buses.

A Munich court on Friday overruled a bid by local
authorities to stop the congress from going ahead. Three
counter-demonstrations were given the green light at another
court hearing.
