Background: Dublin, Ireland is seeing a massive
building boom that has companies making huge profits
and advertising abroad for additional workers. But
on the ground not only are many workers not getting
any benefit from this but the contractors are
eroding their pay and conditions through the use of
sub-contractors. This allows the main contractor to
avoid responsibility for tax payments and liability
for workplace safety. 40 building workers have been
killed in workplace accidents over the last year.
Following a judge making a picket at one of these
sites, Cramptons illegal 'Building Workers Against
the Black Economy' set up to continue the struggle.
----
'Building Workers Against the Black Economy' are
going to picket the National Irish Bank in Dublin's
O'Connell Street tomorrow (Friday 6th) from 1-2pm.
Their struggle to be directly employed, and able to
pay tax and PRSI, has seen them brought to court,
injuncted by Cramptons and subjected to media
silence.
Yet the NIB can admit to massive tax fraud and
nothing happens to them.
The purpose of the picket is to 1. Try to get some
publicity for the builders struggle (which involves
illegal pickets and breaking the Industrial
Relations Act).
2. Point out that there clearly is "one law for the
rich and another law for the poor".
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The use of sub-contractors and C45s not only drives
down wages, it also weakens the unions and worsens
conditions on sites. 40 building workers have died
from preventable accidents in the last 36 months.
The illegal pickets on Crampton sites at Clonskeagh,
Dublin City University, Thomas Street and Stephens
Green have been supported by workers from other
firms. And they have scared big outfits like Walls
and Sisks - who have agreed to end sub-contracting
on their own sites. The tide is turning.
