article written by Kathey Pruitt, which appeared today:

LAWMAKER WON''T RETRACT COLUMN ON BLACK PEOPLE
By Kathey Pruitt, Staff Writer

Black House members accused Republican colleague 
of "pandering to the Ku  Klux Klan" and demanded 
an apology after the North Georgia lawmaker suggested 
in a newspaper column that African-americans support 
drug use.

Rep. Bill Calrk (R-Ringgold) refused to apologize for 
the column he wrote for The Catoose TRibune last week suggesting that Sen.
Ralph David Abernathy III's 
attempts to smuglle marijuana in to the country were 
consistent with the beliefs of his constitutents.

"His people in downtown Atlanta, however, have 
different values from ours," CLark wrote.  "If 
given a chance, they would legalize marijuana 
tomorrow. They see marijuana laws as 'white man's 
laws.' "

"A black lady of child-bearing age can hardly find 
a husband that can support her," Clark's column 
continued.  "Most of the black men of marriageable 
age are either in jail, on probation, on parole or 
out on bond wating trial.  They see the war ondrugs 
as a war on blacks.  To them, Senator Abernathy's 
crime was no more important than you or I exceeding 
the speed limit on the Interstate."
